Attorney Alfred M. Zappala is the Chairman and Founder of The Sicilian Project. Mr. Zappala has seen first-hand the devastation that the current economic crisis has afflicted on Sicily, and has gathered around him many people from American who love Sicily and want to help stem the flow of students and young college grads leaving the Island.
Mr. Zappala has an extensive background in international business law, tourism and legal matters pertaining to Italy and Sicily and maintains a law office in Catania, Sicily.He and his Sicilian law partner handle all matters except criminal law matters there.
He was a founding trustee of the Massachusetts School of Law in Andover, Massachusetts, as well as the founder of MTS Bar Review, a firm which prepared hundreds of law school graduates to pass the Massachusetts Bar Examination.
He teaches bar review courses at Northeastern University School Of Law in Boston when he is in the United States and he has trained over 8,000 practicing attorneys to pass the bar examination over his long career as a professor and lecturer at several other law schools as well.
Currently, his main focus is on assisting clients with matters abroad, focusing primarily to business, travel and other matters in Sicily and Italy through affiliation with Italian Counsel. He splits his time between America and Sicily.
Mr. Zappala has a B.A. from the University of New England and a J.D. from the Massachusetts School of Law. He is licensed to practice law in Massachusetts and has been a member of the Massachusetts Bar Association, Boston Bar Association, Essex County Bar Association and Greater Lawrence Bar Association.
Mr. Zappala is the author of several books on the bar examination and also The Reverse Immigrant a popular book that takes a humorous look at every day life in Sicily. His second book on Sicily, Gaetano’s Trunk was released in September, 2011, and his third book on Sicily Figghiu Beddu was released in 2013. He is currently finishing his fourth book on Sicily and that book will be released in 2014.
For his work promoting Sicily, in 2010 Mr. Zappala was the recipient of The Distinguished Service Award from the Italian Trade Commission.
He has three children and four grandchildren. He considers this to be his single greatest accomplishment in life.
